# Galactic Timeline — Phase 2

## Phase 2: The Quiet Expansion

**Time span:** After the first light, before the great gatherings.

### Poem

The dark was not empty.
It held the next step
like a breath held too long.

Stars learned distance
by leaving.
They did not ask
if the leaving was kind.

What remained
kept the shape
of what had gone.

### Facts

This phase covers the period after the earliest structures formed but before dense clusters and complex systems became common.

- Matter that was close enough began to pull itself into larger bodies.
- The spaces between those bodies grew as the whole expanded.
- Light that left early continued outward; later light had farther to travel.
- No intention is required for the pattern. Distance and gravity are enough.

The poem notes the cost of that distance without claiming the dark was hostile. It was simply the condition in which the next things could form.

### Spacing note
Phase 1 ends with the first sustained light.
Phase 2 begins once that light has room to move.
The gap between them is the time required for the first separations to become stable.
